Who we are and when these terms apply
JJ Roofing Bognor Regis is [operator to confirm: legal name of the business, whether a sole trader, partnership or limited company, and the company number and registered office if it is a company]. We are a roofing contractor working across Bognor Regis and the towns and villages around it. You can reach us on 01243 252373 or at info@jjroofingbognorregis.co.uk.
These terms apply to roofing work we carry out for homeowners and landlords who are acting as consumers. [operator to confirm: whether commercial customers are quoted on these terms or on separate commercial terms.] If anything in your written quote differs from these terms, the quote wins for that job.
Nothing in these terms takes away the rights you have in law as a consumer. Where a term would conflict with those rights, the law applies instead.
Using this website
The pages on this site explain roofing work, typical costs and the rules that can apply to a roof, in plain words. They are general information for homeowners in our area, not advice about your own building, and they are not an offer to do work at any price.
Where a page shows a price range, it is a guide range, either our own published guide or a national figure taken from an outside cost guide, which the page names and dates. The price for your job comes only from the written quote we give you after a survey.
Planning, Building Regulations and listed building rules change, and they depend on the property. Before relying on a rule for your own home, check with your council's planning team or your building control body. Links to other websites, such as gov.uk or legislation.gov.uk, are there to help; we are not responsible for what those sites say.
The survey and your written quote
Before we price any job we look at the roof. Our verdict comes with pictures taken on your roof during that visit, and it says plainly what we would do: mend the fault, hold it with a stopgap for now, or renew the covering, with the reasons. Where a modest repair will last, that is what we put forward.
The quote then comes to you in writing with one total price for the job described. That figure includes the labour, materials, any scaffold the work calls for, and leaving your property clear with all waste removed. It states whether VAT is included. [operator to confirm: VAT registration number, or that the business is not registered for VAT.]
A quote stays open for [operator to confirm: number of days a quote remains valid]. After that we may need to look again, because material prices and the condition of the roof can change.
If the roof hides a problem
Some defects only show once the old covering is lifted, such as rotten battens or a decayed rafter. If that happens we stop, show you photographs, and explain what it needs. Extra work goes ahead only once you have agreed a revised total price in writing.
When the contract starts
A contract is made when you accept the written quote. [operator to confirm: how acceptance is given, for example by signing the quote, replying by email or paying a deposit.] We then send you a written confirmation of the job, the agreed total price and the expected start date, along with the information about your right to cancel set out below.
Start dates depend on the weather, scaffolding and any consent the work needs. We agree a date with you and tell you as early as we can if it has to move. Roof work is not carried out when it would be unsafe, for example in high winds, heavy rain or ice, and a delay of that kind does not change the agreed total price.
Scaffolding that obstructs the highway outside your home needs permission under section 169 of the Highways Act 1980, granted by the highway authority. Across West Sussex that is West Sussex County Council; in the Hampshire towns we cover it is Hampshire County Council. [operator to confirm: who makes the application on JJ jobs, JJ Roofing or its scaffolder, and that the fee sits inside the total price.]
Your right to cancel within 14 days
Most of our contracts are made away from any business premises, for example when you agree the job at your home after the survey, or by phone or email. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give you the right to cancel those contracts without giving a reason.
For a service, the cancellation period ends 14 days after the day on which the contract is entered into. To cancel, tell us clearly before the period ends, by email to info@jjroofingbognorregis.co.uk, by phone on 01243 252373 or in writing. [operator to confirm: that the model cancellation form is sent with every accepted quote.]
If you cancel in time, we reimburse all payments you have made to us under the contract. If we failed to give you the cancellation information we should have, the law extends your cancellation period by up to 12 months.
Starting work inside the cancellation period
We will not start work during the 14 days unless you ask us to. For a contract made away from our premises, the law says you must put that request on a durable medium, which in practice means in writing: an email, a letter or a signed note. A spoken request is not enough.
When you ask us to start early, we will also ask you to acknowledge that once the work has been fully carried out you lose the right to cancel. If you then cancel after work has started but before it is finished, you pay for the part already done, in proportion to the agreed total price. You pay nothing for that early work if we did not give you the information the law requires about cancellation and those costs.
Asking us to start early is entirely your decision. If you would rather wait out the 14 days, we book the work for after they end.
Urgent repair visits you ask us to make
Regulation 28(1)(e) of the 2013 Regulations sets out a narrow exception. If it was you who specifically requested our visit, and the visit was for urgent repairs or maintenance, for instance sheeting over storm damage that is letting rain in, the cancellation rights described above do not apply to that urgent repair.
Regulation 28(2) limits the exception. If, on the same visit, we agree to carry out further work beyond the urgent repair you asked for, or supply goods other than the parts needed to make that repair, the normal cancellation rights apply to that further work. Before we start on an urgent call we tell you which part of the job is the urgent repair, and we put that in writing.
Holding the weather out for now is often the sensible first step after storm damage. Any permanent repair or replacement that follows is surveyed and quoted in the usual way, and the normal cancellation right applies to it.
Paying for the work
The amount you pay is the total price in your accepted written quote, plus any revised total you have agreed in writing for extra work.
[operator to confirm: whether a deposit is taken and how much; whether larger jobs are paid in stages and at which stages; when the final payment is due after completion; and which payment methods are accepted.]
We give you an invoice for every payment. If you think something on the finished job is not right, tell us before you pay the final amount so we can come back and look at it with you. If a payment is late, we will contact you first to sort it out. [operator to confirm: any charge for late payment.]
How we carry out the work
The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 49, requires a trader to perform the service it has agreed to with reasonable care and skill. We hold ourselves to that on every job. Ridge and verge tiles get mechanical fixings to BS 5534, lead is dressed into flashings where lead suits the detail, and flat roofs go down to proper falls.
Where the work is notifiable under the Building Regulations, we explain what is needed and handle the notification. If the work needs planning permission or listed building consent, we tell you before any contract is made, and the work does not start until the consent is in place.
At the end of the job we sweep up, load the debris and take every scrap of it away with us. The written guarantee on our workmanship, what it covers and how to claim under it are set out on the guarantee page.
What we ask of you
Please give us safe access to the roof and the area around the house on the agreed days, and somewhere for the scaffold and a skip or van if the job needs them. Let us know about anything that affects the work: a known leak history, any asbestos survey, alarms or aerials on the roof, or an agreement with a neighbour about access.
If bats or nesting birds are found in the roof, they are protected, and work in that area pauses until the right steps are taken. We explain what that means for timing if it happens.
If you are a tenant, the landlord's consent is needed before we carry out any work. If the property is leasehold, the freeholder or managing agent may need to agree first.
If something goes wrong
Tell us first, by phone, WhatsApp or email, with photographs if you can. Most problems can be sorted on a return visit. Our full process is on the complaints procedure page.
When we reply to your complaint with our decision, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, section 308, requires us to tell you about any alternative dispute resolution or other arrangement available to you if you are not satisfied with the outcome. That duty has applied since 6 April 2026, when the Alternative Dispute Resolution for Consumer Disputes Regulations 2015 were revoked. [operator to confirm: whether JJ Roofing belongs to any ADR scheme, and its name.]
You can also get free consumer advice from Citizens Advice. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when the law changes. The version that applies to your job is the one in force on the day you accepted your written quote, and we will not change the terms of a contract you have already made without your agreement.
These terms were last updated on [operator to confirm: effective date].
